You grow and get to learn by doing

Urvi highlights responsibility as one of the themes from her internship and and how trust from the team made her excited to take it on.

Urvi Agarwal is currently studying her master’s in finance at the Stockholm School of Economics. Earlier this year, she began her internship with Altor, based in the Stockholm office. As the summer ends, her five months long internship will have come to an end and new opportunities awaits. We met Urvi to better understand the excepted and perhaps not so expected learnings she will bring with her.

Five months, quite a big commitment, was this your preference?

Most people normally spend six to eight weeks on internships. Definitely not five months. I’ve tried both, I spent eight months at a Private Equity internship and also tried your classic eight weeks long internship, the shorter one was with Bain.

The big upside with a longer stay is that you have time to properly get to know everyone on a more personal and professional level. You also get to understand the way of working and your are able to implement what you have learned rather than just knowing about it. You learn by doing, not only listening.

Urvi Agarwal, Former intern at Altor

“The responsibility was challenging in the beginning, now I feel capable of learning anything”

How would you describe getting to know the colleagues at the office?

People are really smart and passionate about what they do, everyone is very driven and seem to enjoy what they do. Naturally it’s quite contagious, in all the good ways..

How would you describe your internship?

I was pleasantly surprised by how much responsibility I got. Already my first week I jumped onto a live deal, not only did I get to follow the project from start to finish but I also got to lead streams by myself. I didn’t expect this, it was very challenging and pushed me out of my comfort zone. I learned a lot from it.

I was asked “what do I think”, this threw me off. It made me care on a deeper level about what I was doing, the question sent a clear message that my time and opinion matters.

Did your time here meet your expectations?

I certainly got a real sense of what it’s like to work at Altor and to dive deeper into cases I find interesting. I believe that is the idea, right? At the end of the day, I’m full of new experiences, friends and I’m excited to take on more responsibility. Industry-wise, I’m interested in both the Consumer and Business services sectors. I got to work with both. Of course, some processes and tasks are less fulfilling. But then at least I get to learn them from someone who is caring and passionate.

What advice would you share with others looking for an internship with Altor?

You have the possibility to shape you time here. Speaking up and sharing your ideas will be rewarded. Of course, timing matters. If there are a lot of sourcing opportunities, your support will be appreciated. If something else comes up and you have capacity, let the team know. You will be an important part of the team and get a lot of responsibility; this means you will have impact on the final results. I really appreciated this. If you want to spend your time with people who think that you and your opinion matter, Altor will be a good fit.
