Stronger together

Norican's solutions improve customer productivity by reducing scrap and carbon emissions.

Norican provides equipment, services and technology for molding, melting, casting, cleaning and polishing metallic parts. The company manages five global brands: DISA, ItalPressseGauss, StrikoWestofen, Wheelabrator and Monitizer, and Norican has 8,000 active customers operating 24,000 machines in more than 100 countries across Europe, Asia, South America and North America.

The first among the peers in committing to the Science-Based Targets initiative’s (SBTi) 1.5 degree Celsius business ambition. Now, the team is actively working to set the reduction targets under the SBTi guidance in 2022.

What are the social and environmental challenges facing the metal industry?

Norican services industries where the process of melting, casting and treating metals emit high levels of CO2. As a result, Norican’s customers face pressures to dramatically reduce emissions from their manufacturing processes, creating a need for innovative, green and clean solutions.

What is the potential and impact of Norican’s operations?

As less than 1% of Norican’s GHG impact is related to internal emissions, the biggest opportunity to drive impact lies in helping customers to consume less energy and to become more efficient, while improving their working environments. Innovation of new technology and services, both analog and digital, is the road forward for Norican to help reduce emissions, and Norican has made sizeable investments into building a subscription-based digital offering, that enables customers to access reliable and real-time information on equipment performance, which can be used to improve customer productivity.

As an example of Norican’s efforts into emissions reduction, Norican has developed the StrikoMelter furnace, which delivers increased energy performance equal to an annual emission reduction of roughly 860 tons of CO2 on a typical aluminum melting line (c. 15% reduction in energy consumption). To give another example, leveraging prescriptive machine learning tools, a single DISA iron foundry line can reduce scrap metal by at least 40%, resulting in an annual CO2 reduction of roughly 460 tons.
